Guyana party of apostille convention as of 18 April 2019

As of 18 April 2019 documents issued in the Netherlands for legal purposes in the Co-operative Republic of Guyana (“Guyana”) and requiring legalization, do no longer have to be legalised by the District Court, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy/Consulate of Guyana.

Following the deposit of Guyana’s instrument of accession on 30 July 2018, the “Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents” of 5 October 1961 (“Apostille Convention”) entered into force for Guyana on 18 April 2019.

The Apostille Convention is an international treaty which treaty regulates between States who are party to the treaty, that an apostille is sufficient as “legalization” on foreign documents for legal purposes of those States.

In 2018, Tunisia (30 March 2018) and Bolivia (7 May 2018) became parties to the Apostille Convention. 117 States are currently contracting parties of the Apostille Convention.

On 14 May 2019, the Apostille Convention will also enter into force for the Republic of the Philippines following the deposit of the Philippines’s instrument of accession on 12 September 2018.
