As of 2022 parental leave will be partly paid.

Last year the European Council adopted a directive on work-life balance for parents and informal carers. In order to give effect to this European directive, the Dutch government has announced that during the first 9 weeks of parental leave, parents will be entitled to benefit amounting to 50% of their salary, up to 50% of the statutory maximum daily wage. This benefit is paid directly to the employee. The remaining 17 weeks remain unpaid. With this measure, the Dutch Government wants to make it easier for parents to make their own choices when it comes to the balance between work and care.

Earlier, the Dutch Government decided to extend birth leave. As of 1 January 2019, partners can take 1 working week (instead of the until then applicable 2 days) of birth leave within 4 weeks after the child is born. These leave days shall be paid for by the employer.

As of 1 July 2020, partners can also apply for additional birth leave over a maximum period of 5 weeks. This is only possible if the child is born on or after 1 July 2020. Furthermore, the additional birth leave must be taken within 6 months after the birth of the child. The employer can apply for benefit from the UWV for the additional birth leave. This benefit amounts to 70% of the salary (and is capped at 70% of the statutory maximum daily wage).
